The Government has announced to build 83,677km of roads, highways, greenfield expressways and bridges by 2022 to further optimise efficiency of movement of goods and people across the country.
It includes first phase of new umbrella programme Bharat Mala Pariyojana that involves construction of 34,800 km highways by 2022.
It is an umbrella project under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways that will subsume unfinished parts of National Highway Development Program (NHDP).
It focuses on the new initiatives like development of Border and International connectivity roads, Coastal & port connectivity roads, National Corridors Efficiency improvements, Economic corridors development and others.
The cabinet has approved the proposal for Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I.
