  • Canada has officially opened its first permanent year-round highway to the Arctic Ocean.
  • The highway will connect Tuktoyaktuk, a Canadian hamlet on the Arctic Ocean which was previously accessible only by air or winter ice road, to the southern parts of the country.
  • The connection means Canada will be linked by land all year to its three coasts - Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic.
  • The new 138km (85 miles) all-weather road extends the Dempster Highway from the Yukon to the northern coast.
