'Carbon tax' - Singapore

  • Singapore will impose a 'carbon tax' from 2019 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to fight climate change.
  • A tax of 5 Singapore dollars ($3.81) per tonne of greenhouse gas emissions will be levied from 2019 to 2023.
  • The tax would be imposed on facilities producing 25,000 tonnes or more of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
  • Singapore ranks 26th out of 142 countries in terms of based on the latest International Energy Agency data largely due to its small size and dense population.
