- Australia has reversed a previous government's recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
- The centre-left Labour Party government Cabinet agreed to again recognize Tel Aviv as the capital.
- They also, reaffirmed that Jerusalem's status must be resolved in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.
- Israel annexed east Jerusalem following the 1967 Six Day War and has declared the entire city as its “eternal and indivisible capital”.
- Palestinians claim the eastern part as the capital of a future state.
