Coking Coal in Critical Minerals List

  • Niti Aayog report asked the government to include coking coal in the list of critical minerals.
  • Coking coal constitutes approximately 42 per cent of the cost of steel.
  • The European Union has declared coking coal as a critical raw material along with 29 other raw materials.
  • India's import dependence on coking coal is about 85 per cent, which is much higher than that of the EU (approximately 62 per cent).
