  • The Scientists had discovered a species of soil-dwelling nematode in the Deccan Peninsular biogeographic zone of Odisha’s Keonjhar district.
  • The species, Crassolabium dhritiae, is named after ZSI chief Dr Dhriti Banerjee in recognition to her contributions to zoology and taxonomic research.
  • This discovery brings the total number of known Crassolabium species worldwide to 39, with nine now recorded in India.
  • These microscopic organisms’ aids to the soil health and play a crucial role in nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition.
