- Indian Police Officer Jitender Kumar, an Indian peacekeeper, is among the 119 military, police and civilian personnel who will be honoured this year with Dag Hammarskjöld Medal.
- It is a prestigious UN medal for courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.
- Officer Jitender Kumar sacrificed his life while working in an UN Stabilisation Mission in the war torn Central African country of Congo.
- Started in 1997, this medal is given in memory of Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations.
- He died in a plane crash in 1961 while en route to cease-fire negotiations during the Congo Crisis.
