  • Nearly 6,800 people lost their lives in the country over the past three years due to hydro meteorological calamities.
  • Hydro meteorological calamities include flash floods, landslides and cyclones.
  • West Bengal has recorded the highest deaths among all States (964 deaths).
  • This amounts to 14% of deaths due to hydro meteorological calamities.
  • Other than West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh recorded 833 deaths, followed by Kerala 708.
  • In both the States, the spike in the casualties has been caused by floods.
  • Tamil Nadu has recorded 201 casualties.
