- It has now been included in the annual list of United Nations Observances.
- A resolution in this regard was adopted by the Conference of Parties to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, held in Manila of Philippines in 2010.
- International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the nodal agency for organizing it.
- The theme for this year is “Seafarers are Key Workers”.
