  • He the 18th century Roman Catholic convert and “martyr” from Kanyakumari district.
  • He was born Neelakanta Pillai in 1712.
  • He took the name "Lazarus" after embracing Christianity in 1745.
  • "Lazarus" or "Devasahayam" in the local language, meaning "God is my help"
  • He will be canonised on May 5 of 2022 by Pope Francis at the St Peter's Basilica in Vatican.
  • He will become the first Indian layman - a non-ordained member of the Church - to be conferred sainthood.
  • He will the first saint from Tamilnadu.
  • Vatican, fully surrounded by Rome in Italy, is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church.
