Disposal of Criminal Cases Against Legislators

  • The Supreme Court issued guidelines to monitor the speedy disposal of criminal cases against Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs).
  • The SC said that it would be difficult for it to form a uniform guideline for trial courts relating to speedy disposal of cases against MP/MLAs.
  • It also asked the high courts to set up a special bench to monitor criminal trials against lawmakers.
  • High Courts may call upon special lower courts for reports on the status of trials against lawmakers in criminal cases.
  • The district judges have been asked to ensure sufficient infrastructure and technological facilities for designated special courts trying lawmakers.
  • Further, the top court has asked High Courts to register a Suo motu cases for effective monitoring and disposal of cases involving MPs/MLAs.
