- The Tamil Nadu assembly passed the Dr J Jayalalithaa University Bill 2021 to establish a new university.
- According to this the Thiruvalluvar University would be bifurcated and a new university would be established in Villupuram.
- The new university will start functioning from this academic year.
- Thiruvalluvar University was created by the former chief minister M Karunanidhi.
