  • Scientists discovered the oldest Earth rock on the Moon, which is found from the lunar sample bought by the Apollo 14 astronauts in February 1971.
  • This rock was formed between 4 and 4.1 billion years ago, about 12.4 miles beneath the Earth’s crust.
  • The 2-gram fragment of rock was composed of quartz, feldspar, and zircon -- all commonly found on Earth and highly unusual on the Moon.
