- 84 children have died due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.
- According to the doctors, the deaths due to AES are being caused due to excessive heat and humidity.
- Locally this fever is being called 'Chamki'.
AES
- Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the major cause of AES in India (ranging from 5%-35%).
- In India, AES outbreaks in north and eastern India have been linked to children eating unripe litchi fruit on empty stomachs.
- Nipah virus, Zika virus are also found as causative agents for AES.
- AES most commonly affects children and young adults.
- It can lead to considerable morbidity and mortality.
