  • 84 children have died due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.
  • According to the doctors, the deaths due to AES are being caused due to excessive heat and humidity.
  • Locally this fever is being called 'Chamki'.

AES

  • Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the major cause of AES in India (ranging from 5%-35%).
  • In India, AES outbreaks in north and eastern India have been linked to children eating unripe litchi fruit on empty stomachs.
  • Nipah virus, Zika virus are also found as causative agents for AES.
  • AES most commonly affects children and young adults.
  • It can lead to considerable morbidity and mortality.
