Encroached Centrally Protected Monuments

  • India has a total of 3,695 Centrally Protected Monuments or Sites in the country.
  • A total of 356 centrally protected monuments have been illegally encroached into across India.
  • This is an increase from the 2019 figure of 321 protected monuments that have been infringed.
  • Uttar Pradesh has the largest number (743) of centrally protected monuments
  • Tamil Nadu has the second-highest number (412) of centrally protected monuments.
  • Same time, they have the high number of that have been illegally encroached viz. Uttar Pradesh (75) and Tamil Nadu (74).
  • They are followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra with 48 and 46 monuments respectively.
  • Centrally Protected Monuments are those that are protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
  • Under amended Act 2010, construction activities are prohibited within 100 meters of a centrally protected monument.
  • Construction within 100 - 200 meters of these structures is strictly regulated.
