End of manual scavenging at Kerala

  • A robot called Bandicoot has been developed by a group of young engineers who run a startup named Genrobotics.
  • The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) have signed a memorandum of understanding for transfer of technology and products, which include the use of robots for cleaning up manholes.
  • The robot has WiFi and Bluetooth modules and can be remotely operated. It is powered by pressurised air.
  • The robot will bring an end to the abominable and legally banned practice of manual scavenging.
