- The central government's tax collections on petrol and diesel jumped to Rs 3.35 lakh crore in FY21.
- It was from Rs 1.78 lakh crore in FY20.
- It includes excises on not just petrol and diesel but also Aviation Turbine Fuel, natural gas and crude oil.
- The Collections would have been higher but fuel sales were falling due to lockdown in last year.
- The Centre had raised excise duty by Rs 13 per litre on petrol and Rs 16 on diesel between March-end and May 2020.
- If petrol is selling for more than Rs 100 a litre and diesel over Rs 90 in most states, it is more due to high taxes rather than costlier crude.
