External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj embarked a three-day official visit to Azerbaijan's capital city Baku to participate in Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Conference.
The NAM Mid-Term Ministerial Conference held at Baku on 5-6 April under the theme of "Promoting international peace and security for sustainable development"
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. As of 2012, the movement has 120 members.
17 states and 10 International organizations have an observer status to NAM. NAM plays an important role in maintenance of the international peace and security.
In 2011, the Republic of Azerbaijan joined the movement at the XVI Ministerial Conference held in BaIi (Indonesia).
In 2019, the Republic of Azerbaijan will host the XVIII Summit of the NAM and will be chair of NAM between 2019 -2022.
