As part of measures to check air pollution, the Tamil Nadu government unveiled a battery-powered electric air-conditioned bus.
It would be initially operated on a trial basis on routes specified by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Chennai.
These 32-seater buses are fitted with GPS, fire detection and suppression system and can travel upto 120 km on a single charge.
They are manufactured by Ashok Leyland.
In June 2018 the State government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with England-based C-40 Cities Climate Leadership Group to manufacture electric buses.
Shortly, 525 more such buses are expected to ply all over major cities of Tamilnadu under Phase-II of Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Scheme (FAME India Scheme).
