- The United Nations has adopted the first-ever international treaty to govern the high seas and protect remote ecosystems vital to humanity.
- This is Officially known as the Treaty on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction.
- It aims to protecting and governing activities such as fishing, mining, and oil extraction in international waters.
- The treaty still needs to be ratified by at least 60 member nations to take effect.
- The treaty establishes principles for sharing the benefits of “marine genetic resources.
- The high seas cover more than 60 percent of the earth’s surface.
