- The first-ever survey of the fishing cats in and around the Chilika lake in Odisha started.
- Fishing cats are elusive nocturnal mammals.
- They are generally found in the marshy wetlands of northern and eastern India and on the mangroves of the east coast.
- Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon.
- The lake is located at the mouth of the Daya River flowing into the Bay of Bengal.
- It is Asia’s largest and world’s second-largest lagoon after the New Caledonian barrier reef.
- The lake is the largest wintering ground for migratory waterfowl found anywhere on the Indian subcontinent.
- In 1981, Chilika Lake became the first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
- The major attraction at the Chilika lake is Irrawaddy dolphins.
