  • The first-ever survey of the fishing cats in and around the Chilika lake in Odisha started.
  • Fishing cats are elusive nocturnal mammals.
  • They are generally found in the marshy wetlands of northern and eastern India and on the mangroves of the east coast.
  • Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon.
  • The lake is located at the mouth of the Daya River flowing into the Bay of Bengal.
  • It is Asia’s largest and world’s second-largest lagoon after the New Caledonian barrier reef.
  • The lake is the largest wintering ground for migratory waterfowl found anywhere on the Indian subcontinent.
  • In 1981, Chilika Lake became the first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
  • The major attraction at the Chilika lake is Irrawaddy dolphins.
