The President appointed five additional judges to the Madras High Court.
With the appointment of five new judges, the working strength of the High Court had increased from 52 to 57.
The sanctioned strength of the Madras High Court is 75.
The number of women judges in the court also increased to an all-time high of 14 after the induction of the three new women judges.
One of the new judges (Ms.Victoria Gowri) appointment was opposed by a group of advocates from Chennai on the ground of having delivered “hate speeches” against religious minorities.
But the apex court dismissed the cases, on merits, minutes after she completed taking oath.
