- In a first, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit unfurled the Indian tricolor at the Raj Bhavan on the occasion of Independence Day.
- Generally, a Governor unfurls the tricolor only on Republic Day, January 26 during a colorful ceremony here at the Marina.
- Purohit hoisting the national flag at Raj Bhavan was a break from the tradition established in 1974.
- Before that year, it was the practice for governors to hoist the flag at the official Independence Day event of the State government.
- But, with the efforts of former chief minister M.Karunanidhi, this privilege was later given to chief ministers of the country.
