- He served as Punjab’s Chief Minister five times: 1970-71; 1977-80; 1997-2002 and from 2007 to 2017 (two consecutive terms).
- The Government of India awarded him the second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2015.
- In 1970, he became the youngest Chief Minister of an Indian State at the time.
