- The powerful earthquakes in south-eastern Turkey also caused the destruction of a 2,200-year-old Roman monument, the Gaziantep Castle.
- The hilltop Gaziantep Castle is situated in the centre of the city, Gaziantep in Turkey.
- It was built in the 2nd and 3rd Centuries as a watchtower in the Roman period.
- During the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 527-565 C.E., it was further developed and it took its current form.
- It also saw changes made during the reign of the Ayyubids in the 12th and 13th Centuries, as well as the Ottoman Empire.
- It played an important role during Turkey's war of independence of the early 20th Century.
- It was a symbol of the defence of the city against the French forces after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
