- Veteran actor, film director, critic of the right-wing policies, Kannada writer and playwright Girish Karnad (1938 – 2019) passed away.
- Nagmandala, Yayati and Tughlaq are some of his most famous works.
- Karnad served as the director of the Film and Television Institute of India from 1974–1975 and as Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Academy from 1988–1993.
- He was awarded Padmashri (1974), Padma Bushan (1992), the highest literary honour Gananpith (1998).
