Glacier Mass Loss in the Hindu Kush Himalayas

- The Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH) have seen a 65 per cent faster loss of glacier mass.
- The glaciers lost a mass of 0.28 metres of water equivalent per year (m w.e.) between 2010 and 2019.
- It was 0.17 (m w.e.) per year between 2000 and 2009.
- The Karakoram range, has also started showing a decline in glacier mass.
- It is losing 0.09 m w.e. per year during 2010-2019.
- Glaciers occupy an area of approximately 73,173 square kilometres (km2) in the HKH.
- The average temperature in the region has increased by 0.28°C per decade between 1951 and 2020.
- Himalayan glaciers may lose 75 percent of ice by 2100.
- The Hindu Kush Himalaya stretches 3,500 km (2,175 miles) across Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan.
