  • The report was released by the Global Carbon Project – a group of scientists who track carbon emitted by human activities.
  • This report shows no sign of CO2 decrease in atmosphere.
  • The Earth urgently needs to limit warming to 1.5 degree Celsius.
  • The global carbon emissions are expected to reach 40.6 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in 2022.
  • This projection is close to the highest-ever annual total of 40.9 billion tonnes of CO2 emitted in 2019.
  • The projected emissions decrease in China (0.9 percent) and in the European Union (0.8 percent), but increase in the US (1.5 percent), India (6 percent) and the rest of the world (1.7 percent).
  • In India, emissions in 2022 are to increase by 6 percent, driven mostly by a 5 percent increase in coal emissions.
  • In 2021, China (31 per cent), the United States (14 per cent) and the European Union (8 per cent) are the major contributors of the global carbon emissions.
  • India accounted to 7 per cent of the global carbon emissions.
  • India is expected to witness the highest increase in carbon emissions in the world in 2022 when compared with the previous year.
  • The United States is estimated to record the second-highest increase in the carbon emissions.
  • India is ranked third globally in terms of gross emission volume and ranked very low in per capita emissions.
