  • India ranked 100th position among 119 countries on Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2017 report released by the Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
  • Compared to 97th rank in 2016 Global Hunger Index (GHI), this year it slipped by three positions.
Global Hunger Index
  • The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a multidimensional statistical tool used to describe the state of countries’ hunger situation.
  • The GHI measures progress and failures in the global fight against hunger and is updated once in a year.
  • The GHI ranks countries taking into account of four parameters on a 100-point scale. Zero is the best score and 100 is the worst.
  • The Four Parameters are,
    • Undernourishment
    • Child wasting
    • Child stunting
    • Child mortality.
  • India ranks 100 among 119 countries with a score of 31.4 and hunger situation is in the “Serious” category.
  • Over three-year duration, the country has seen a slide of 45 positions from 55 in 2014.
  • According to the report, India is better only than Pakistan and Afghanistan among the Asian countries.
