- India ranked 100th position among 119 countries on Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2017 report released by the Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
- Compared to 97th rank in 2016 Global Hunger Index (GHI), this year it slipped by three positions.
- The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a multidimensional statistical tool used to describe the state of countries’ hunger situation.
- The GHI measures progress and failures in the global fight against hunger and is updated once in a year.
- The GHI ranks countries taking into account of four parameters on a 100-point scale. Zero is the best score and 100 is the worst.
- The Four Parameters are,
- Undernourishment
- Child wasting
- Child stunting
- Child mortality.
- India ranks 100 among 119 countries with a score of 31.4 and hunger situation is in the “Serious” category.
- Over three-year duration, the country has seen a slide of 45 positions from 55 in 2014.
- According to the report, India is better only than Pakistan and Afghanistan among the Asian countries.
