  • The Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas was published by the UN Environment Program (UNEP).
  • The atlas provides evidence for the need to enhance protection and restoration of peatlands, along with investments in research and monitoring.
  • 488 million hectares of peatlands globally, with 12% highly degraded.
  • Peatlands are only covering around 3-4% of the planet’s land surface, contain up to one-third of the world’s soil carbon.
  • It is twice the amount of carbon found in the world’s forests.
  • Peatlands composed primarily of organic soils rich in carbon (peat), with at least 40 cm of organic material.
  • Peatlands emit 1,941 Mt COe per year due to human activity.
  • India’s Peatlands, estimated to be around 0.2%, are generally found in Eastern Himalayas, Western Ghats, and the North-East Indian region.
  • The Congo Basin holds the largest known tropical peatland.
