  • Global Report on Internal Displacement (GRID 2021) is released by Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre
  • According to the report, there were 40.5 million new internal displacements in 2020.
  • This is the highest annual figure for 10 years.
  • These were triggered globally by disasters and violence.
  • 9.8 million displacements were due to conflict and violence.
  • Weather-related events accounted for almost all of the 30.7 million disaster-led displacements last year.
  • Storms and floods caused the majority of displacements.
  • Cyclone Amphan, which made landfall in Eastern India and Bangladesh in May 2020, triggered around five million displacements across Bangladesh, India, Bhutan and Myanmar.
