- The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024.
- It shows, for the first time in 2022, that aquaculture production exceeded fisheries.
- Global production reached a record 223.2 million metric tons in 2022, 4.4 percent more than in 2020.
- Asian countries produced 70 percent of all aquatic animals.
- Wild-capture fisheries produced 92.3 MT in 2022, 91.0 MT of aquatic animals and 1.3 MT of algae.
- China remained the top capture fisheries producer (14.3 percent), followed by Indonesia (8.0 percent) and India (6.0 percent).
- Aquatic animal production is expected to increase by 10 percent by 2032.
