  • World Health Organisation has released a report called Global status report on alcohol and health 2018, which presents a comprehensive picture of alcohol consumption.
  • The harmful use of alcohol resulted in some 3 million deaths in 2016 (5.3% of all deaths) worldwide, with an estimated 2.3 million men and 0.7 million women.
  • The report says that per capita liquor consumption in India increased from 2.4 litres in 2005 to 5.7 litres in 2016.
  • The total alcohol per capita consumption (15+ years) is expected to increase in 50% of WHO regions, by 2025.
  • The highest increase is expected in the South East Asia Region with an increase of 2.2 litres alone in India.
  • Globally, total per capita consumption rose from 5.5 litres in 2005 to 6.4 litres in 2010 and was still at the level of 6.4 litres in 2016.
