- Goa was liberated in a military operation by the Indian armed forces in 1961.
- It was done by the Operation Vijay to liberate Goa from the Portuguese rule.
- This year marks the 60th anniversary of this operation.
- Also, India was completely free from European rule on this day.
- The Portuguese governor Afonso de Albuquerque captured in 1510.
- By the end of 19th century their colonies were limited to Goa, Diu, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
