  • Latest edition of the ‘Good Governance Index’ has been launched on the occasion of ‘Good Governance Day’ – December 25, 2019.
  • Good Governance Day is observed on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (25th December).
  • It was observed for the first time in 2014.

GGI

  • Good Governance Index (GGI) is a tool to assess the status of governance and the impact of various interventions taken up by the State Government and UTs.
  • GGI was released by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances under The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions.
  • Tamil Nadu has topped the Good Governance Index followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
  • The GGI takes into consideration 10 sectors.
  • These ten Governance Sectors are measured on total 50 indicators.
  • The states and UTs are divided into three groups: a). Big States, b). North-East & Hill States and c). UTs.

Sector-wise ranking:

  • In the environment sector:
    • The top three states are West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
    • Jammu & Kashmir has topped among the North-East and Hill States.
  • Judicial and public security ranking:
    • Tamil Nadu tops in the judicial and public security ranking. West Bengal is at the bottom of the chart here.
  • Economic governance:
    • Karnataka is at the top under the economic governance category.
  • Health:
    • Kerala is at the top in the public health sector followed by Tamil Nadu and Goa.
  • Public Infrastructure and Utilities:
    • Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh have topped their respective categories.
  • Social Welfare and Development Sector:
    • Chhattisgarh has topped among big states.
