Govt. reconstitutes a Multi-Agency Group to investigate Paradise Papers

- Recently, ICIJ has released a document named Paradise papers which is mainly gathered from Aplleby, an offshore law firm.
- The Paradise Papers are set of 13.4 million documents pertaining to tax evasion and offshore investment activities of some of the world’s most powerful people and companies from 180 countries.
- The government reconstituted a Multi-Agency Group led by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman to investigate cases relating to the ‘Paradise Papers’ data disclosure.
- Earlier this Multi Agency Group was formed to investigate cases related to Panama leaks.
- The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), and its Indian Partner The Indian Express has released this document.
- Among 180 countries represented in the data, India ranks 19th in terms of the number of names that feature in the papers.
- The ICIJ is a global network of more than 200 investigative journalists in 70 countries who collaborate on in-depth in investigative stories, founded in 1997 by respected American journalist Chuck Lewis.
- Its headquarters is in Washington DC, US.
- Earlier in 2016, it had released Panama Papers.
