Scientists have officially made the first detections of the gravitational wave background.
It is a sign that gravitational waves from slowly merging pairs of supermassive black holes can be detected from Earth in a background field of low-frequency energy.
Gravitational waves are created by astronomically dense objects in our universe, usually in orbit around each other.
They discovered first in 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO.
