- The gray whale was vanished from the Atlantic Ocean by the 18th century.
- But there have been five documented observations of the animal in Atlantic and Mediterranean waters in the last 15 years.
- According to the most recent estimates, there are believed to be about 14,000 gray whales, down from 27,000 in 2019.
