- The United Nations Security Council authorized a foreign security mission to Haiti.
- The Caribbean country asked for help to fight violent gangs that have largely overrun its capital Port-au-Prince.
- Several of Haiti’s Caribbean neighbours – Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, and Jamaica – have also offered support to the mission.
