Hong Kong: Extradition Bill Withdrawn

- Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam has said she will withdraw the controversial “extradition bill”.
- Introduction of the bill in April 2019 triggered the current three months of unprecedented “pro-democracy” rallies in the country.
- The proposed bill would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China.

- Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after Qing Dynasty of China “ceded” Hong Kong Island at the end of the First Opium War in 1842.
- With additional territories, Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898.
- The territory was transferred to China in 1997.
- The Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the "one country, two systems".
