  • The Karnataka government has approved to rename Hyderabad-Karnataka region of the state as Kalyana Karnataka.
  • Hyderabad-Karnataka is a colonial-era nomenclature that associated the region with the erstwhile Nizams of Hyderabad.

  • It comprises 6 districts of Karnataka - Bidar, Bellary, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir.
  • The districts were part of the Nizam’s territory and brought under Karnataka in 1956 when states in India were reorganised.
  • Article 371 (j) created through Constitutional Amendment Act 98th, 2012 gives special status to this region as it is considered one of the most backward in the country.
