The Karnataka government has approved to rename Hyderabad-Karnataka region of the state as Kalyana Karnataka.
Hyderabad-Karnataka is a colonial-era nomenclature that associated the region with the erstwhile Nizams of Hyderabad.
It comprises 6 districts of Karnataka - Bidar, Bellary, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir.
The districts were part of the Nizam’s territory and brought under Karnataka in 1956 when states in India were reorganised.
Article 371 (j) created through Constitutional Amendment Act 98th, 2012 gives special status to this region as it is considered one of the most backward in the country.
