- The Parliament on September 22, 2020 passed the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Laws (Amendment) Bill 2020.
- This Amendment Bill 2020 will amend the principal Acts of 2014 and 2017.
- It seeks to declare five IIITs in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode - IIIT Bhopal, IIIT Agartala, IIIT Surat, IIIT Bhagalpur and IIIT Raichur as Institutions of National importance.
- The institutes are already functioning as societies, registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860.
- With this, the total number of IIITs that have been declared as Institutions of National Importance will go up to 25.
