  • Violence erupted during the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organised by the All-Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district, Manipur.
  • The protest was against the demand of non-tribal Meiteis to be granted the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
  • Due to this, Article 355 of the Indian Constitution was imposed in the state.
  • The Union government assigned a security advisor to the state government.
  • Article 355 is found in part XVIII of the Indian constitution which contains emergency provisions that are meant to be used in extremely rare circumstances.
