India at Tokyo Paralympics

  • China topped the medal table in this version (207 – 96 golds, 60 silvers and 51 bronzes).
  • It is the fifth time; China tops the medal table since Athens (2004).
  • India won a total of 19 medals at Tokyo Paralympics 2020, including 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze.
  • The 19 medals were clinched by Indian para-athletes across five sporting disciplines including shooting, javelin throw, badminton, athletics and archery.
  • India have finished at 24th position out of 162 nations in terms of overall medal tally.
  • India made its first appearance at the Paralympics in 1968.
  • India won only 12 medals from 1968 to 2016.
  • It had won four medals at Rio 2016 and four at the 1984 Paralympics.
  • This is the first time that badminton and taekwondo has been added to the Paralympics.
  • Tokyo has been the first city to host two Paralympic Games since the city held the 1964 Paralympics.
  • Avani was India's flag-bearer at the Tokyo Paralympics closing ceremony.
  • The Indian gold medallists at Tokyo Paralympics include shooter Avani Lekhara, javelin thrower Sumit Antil, shooter Manish Narwal and shuttlers Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar.
  • Shooters Avani Lekhara, who won a gold and bronze, and Singh raj Adhana, who won a silver and bronze, were the top performers for India with two medals each.

  • India’s ace archer Harvinder Singh has won the bronze medal in the men’s individual recurve open.
  • He has become India’s first-ever archer to win a medal in the Paralympics.
  • Indian shooters Manish Narwal and Singh raj Adhana clinched the gold and silver medal respectively in the P4 – Mixed 50m Pistol SH1 final (Shooting).
  • Suhas Yathi raj, current district magistrate of Noida, has become the first IAS officer to win Paralympics medal.
  • He won the silver medal in in the men’s singles at Badminton SL4 class final.
  • Pramod Bhagat and Manoj Sarkar had won a gold and a bronze respectively in men's singles at Badminton SL3 category.
  • Pramod claimed India's first badminton gold at the Paralympics.
  • Krishna Nagar won the second Para-Badminton gold for India.
  • He becomes the first-ever SH6 gold medallist in the history of the Indian Paralympics.
