- The Indian rock python (Python molurus) is used to be a common sight across Tamil Nadu, especially in agricultural areas and rocky foothills.
- However, due to habitat loss, the species is believed to have declined across the State, except in the Moyar Valley.
- It is Classified as “near threatened” in the IUCN Red list.
- Between 2018 and 2020, the number was at least 80 individual rock pythons in MTR, STR and Bhavani Sagar.
- Rock pythons are non-venomous, and usually avoid humans.
