Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration – Chandi Prasad Bhatt

  • Noted environmentalist and pioneer of the Chipko movement, Chandi Prasad Bhatt has been awarded the Indira Gandhi award for National Integration.
  • The award was instituted by the Congress party in memory of the late prime minister.
  • Bhatt has been awarded the award for the years 2017 and 2018 for his “services in promoting and preserving national integration in the country”.
About CP Bhatt
  • He had founded the cooperative organisation Dasholi Gram Swarajya Sangh and led the first Chipko movement in Mandal, Uttrakhand in 1973.
  • He is also a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1982 for community leadership, Padma Shri in 1986, Padma Bushan in 2005 and Gandhi peace Prize in 2013.
