Indira Gandhi Peace Prize

  • Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be conferred the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2017.
  • Prize is awarded to him for his leadership of the country and his achievements during the momentous 10 years from 2004 to 2014, for his contributions to the cause of economic and social development, security and others.
  • The international award named after former prime minister Indira Gandhi was instituted in 1986 by Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. The award has been announced on the eve of Gandhi's birth anniversary.
  • It is awarded to individuals or organizations in recognition of their creative efforts towards promoting international peace, development.
  • It is also bestowed upon them for creating new international economic order and ensuring that scientific discoveries are used for the larger good of humanity and enlarging the scope of freedom.
  • The last two recipients have been the Indian Space Research Organisation and the UN High Commission for Refugees.
