- India will formally commission its first home-built aircraft carrier at Kochi’s Cochin Shipyard Limited.
- It was built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, a Public Sector Shipyard under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.
- The largest ship ever constructed in India’s maritime history is the INS Vikrant.
- The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier bears the name of its esteemed predecessor, India’s first aircraft carrier, which had an important role to play in the war of 1971.
- The INS Vikrant however will not have its own fleet of fighter jets on deck.
- It will rely on a few Russian-designed aircraft borrowed from India's only other carrier, the INS Vikramaditya.
